Yesterday was the 53rd National Day of Malaysia and the Malaysian High Commission in Brunei organized a simple "Flag Raising" ceremony and "Sungkai" for the Malaysian community in Brunei. After the "Flag Raising" and singing of the national anthem, the outgoing High Commissioner, His Excellency Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari delivered his speech. A presentation of gifts and certificates were given to six outstanding students, followed by a "cake cutting" ceremony, prayers and "sungkai" at the Malaysian High Commission's premises. The actual event and celebration of the 53rd National Day will be held on 20th September 2010 (after the fasting month and at a venue to be decided). Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!
