Justice League Run Brunei

I had stopped participating in running events since 9th June 2013 after injuring my knee at Pusat Ehsan's 12 km run but this morning I took part in the 5 km "Justice League Run Brunei" after an absence of more than 2 years! If I had not checked their Facebook profile, I'd have thought that the venue was at the Indoor Stadium where I paid and collected my race kit but it was actually at the Jerudong Park Garden. There were two categories, the 3 km and the 5 km runs which were both fun runs. The 5 km run was supposed to flag off at 6.30am but was delayed to almost 7.00am due to a delay in the warm up session. There were 5 superheros' T-shirts to choose from and I chose the "Batman" T-shirt which came with a mask. The other superheros are Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern. Luckily, the haze situation was not that bad this morning, otherwise the runners would have a hard time breathing!

Collected my Finishers' Medal on 13-6-2013
Returned last night from Kuala Lumpur via BI874 which touched down at 11.40pm; reached home well after midnight and after 3 hours of sleep, I went to the Indoor Stadium to participate in Pusat Ehsan's "The Run", a charity event which was being organised for the second year in a row. I took part in the 12 km veteran run which flagged off at 6.00am and I managed to complete the run at 7.32am. More than 7,000 runners participated this year in the various categories, ie. 2km, 5km, 12km and 21km. After the 10km mark, I started experiencing cramps on both my calves and at the finishing line, I was feeling a bit dizzy! Sat down on the kerb for almost half an hour before I felt better and drove home for a hot shower and that much needed sleep! Finishers' medals were not distributed on the spot but instead a slip was given to claim the finishers' medal from 13 to 15 June at the Indoor Stadium.

Standard Chartered Half-Marathon 2013

 My 10km Finishers' Medal
 At the starting line.
Caps were given this year but I didn't use it; will keep as a momento!
I started taking up running when I participated in Standard Chartered Half-Marathon 2012 on 8 April last year and since then I have been jogging at least once a week besides my regular squash games on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. SCB Half-Marathon 2013 flagged off this morning at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with the 21km run at exactly 5.30am followed by the 10km run at 6.00am. The next categories which were the 5km and 2.5km started at 6.15am. I participated in the 10km run and managed to finish in 1 hour and 17 minutes (despite a swollen right knee) but I will update once the official results are out.  I almost had cramps on both my calves with approximately 100 metres left to the finish line; guess age is catching up! As usual, I left the venue early at 7.40am (after cooling off), for that much needed rest! Thank you, SCB for organizing this year's half-marathon and all the sponsors for supporting this event.

Muhibah Run 2013

This morning, PWM with the support of the Malaysian High Commission organized a Muhibah Run 2013 at the Malaysian High Commission's car park. More than 100 participants turned up for the run which were categorized into the "VIP run" which was about 2 km and the "Jungle Trail" run which was about 5 km. I took part in the "Jungle Trail" run (my first run for 2013) which was a totally different ball game from the road runs which I used to participate. The two steep slopes and rough terrain which I encountered was enough to make my soles and calves very sore! A big thank you to the sponsors, Seri Sentosa, Am Capital, Kingston Beverages (Revive), Nestle (Milo), Superwater (Rainfresh mineral water) and Zumba Fitness Studio for the warming up session. Congrats to the Organizing Chairwoman, Ellin for a job well done!

BIBD Charity Expedition

Ever since I participated in Standard Chartered's "Run for a Reason" on 8th April 2012, I got hooked! I've participated in four more runs since then; the latest being the BIBD Charity Expedition held this morning at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. My stamina has improved but my feet still hurts but it hurts good! More than 5,000 runners and cyclists took part in the 2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and 53 km (cycling) events. I finished my 10 km race in one hour nine minutes (time taken from my phone as the official time from the timing chip has not been announced yet), quite an improvement for my standard! There were 200 lucky draw prizes to be won but I didn't stay (left at 8.00am) as I was there for charity; not for the lucky draw!

Ozone Run 2012

Ministry of Development Building
My 12km Finishers' Medal
 Today's Borneo Bulletin
The ozone layer absorbs more than 97% of the sun's UV rays which is potentially harmful to life forms on Earth and all I know is that the ozone layer is gradually being depleted via our vehicles' exhaust fumes and release of CFCs from our air-conditioning units. Of course there are other factors which I'm not technically or scientifically inclined to understand! To mark the 25th anniversary of World Ozone Day, the Department of Environment, Parks & Recreation (JASTRE) under the Ministry of Development, organized Brunei's first Ozone Run 2012 on 16 September 2012 to create awareness to the plight to prevent the ozone layer from further thinning. I registered for the 12km run (the other two categories were the 3km and 6km) which flagged off at 6.30am and I finished the run at 7.56am (time taken from my phone as no timing chips were given). After that, I queued for the finishers' medal and certificate and finally got my medal but no certificate (missing) at 9.00am, more than an hour's wait! I left right after that as I've to get some rest (woke up at 4.30am) before my next appointment (movie) at 12.20pm.

The Run

Finished the 12km run in 01.25.44 (nett time).
I had to type in my name onto the certificate myself.
Photo taken before dawn with James.
Waiting for the prize presentation after the run.
Simply dubbed "The Run", Pusat Ehsan's first charity run was a huge success considering the logistics and the coordination of all parties involved in organizing this event. As this is also the first time they organized such an event, I must congratulate the organizing committee for a job well done! This is by no means an easy task and they can only get better next year (I can't wait for the next run already!). There were some minor hiccups; I didn't get the T-shirt size I indicated and there was a typo error (the word "waterfront" was misspelt) on the finishers' medals but as I said, these are just  minor issues. The weather was kind to us as we did not feel the heat during and after the run. I left the Waterfront at 9.30am after witnessing the prize presentation to winners of all the various categories. I had to get home, shower and sleep it off as my calves are aching and there's a blister on one of my toes not to mention that I woke up at 4.00am this morning!
