Celebrating Malaysia Day & Hari Raya Aidil Fitri

16th September 1963 marks the day Sarawak and Sabah joined the Federation of Malaya which led to the formation of Malaysia and this date has recently been celebrated as "Malaysia Day" besides "Hari Merdeka" which falls on 31st August each year. Malaysians residing in Brunei were hosted to a reception yesterday afternoon (from 4.00pm to 6.00pm) to celebrate "Malaysia Day" and "Hari Raya Aidil Fitri" by the His Excellency, Dato' Abdullah Sani Omar at the Malaysian High Commission at Jalan Kebangsaan. One of the programmes which was the the flag raising ceremony was cancelled due to the rain. Several Malaysian students were presented with "students' excellence awards" sponsored by AmCapital, Maybank and RHB Bank. The guests were later treated to a sumptuous buffet but unfortunately I cannot eat much as I had to leave early for my regular squash game which was scheduled at 6.00pm!

Yesterday afternoon, the Malaysian High Commission (MHC) hosted a Hari Raya reception for the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak who is on a one day official visit to Brunei Darussalam. The event was being held at the Dewan Indera Kayangan, Empire Hotel & Country Club from 4.00pm to 6.30pm.Several Malaysian cabinet ministers, senior officials from MHC and the Malaysian community residing in Brunei attended this function. I even had the privilege of sitting next to the Minister of Public Works, Dato' Shaziman Abu Mansor! We are indeed a lucky lot; how often do you get to greet the Prime Minister of Malaysia in person and have a free hi-tea as well!

Last night, we attended His Excellency Dato' Abdullah Sani Omar, the High Commissioner of Malaysia's Hari Raya open house at his official residence in Jalan Kebangsaan. Other members of PWM were already helping themselves when I arrived; guess I was a little bit late but then again, better late then never! Dato' and Datin were such fantastic hosts and we love the Malaysian cuisine that was prepared for the guests. Selamat Hari Raya, Dato' and Datin and thank you for the invitation and for your wonderful hospitality. We would love to come again next year! Fingers crossed!

On the 2nd day of Hari Raya  (1st September 2011), I visited 3 friends and 2 of my Directors' "Hari Raya open houses" together with some of my colleagues. Attached are some of the photos which we took at 4 of these "open houses" except for the last house (Pg Sharifuddin's residence) as he was busy helping one of his guests whose car had fallen into the drain!
